I'm planning a family (3 children ages 7-14) holiday to Scotland for roughly 2 weeks. Looking mainly for hiking day trips plus maybe a visit to a castle or museum. I would appreciate recommendations for itinerary in the Highlands.

Plenty of route alternatives - I presume you'll hire a car? Places to look at include aviemore, braemar, isle of Skye. If I had to make one recommendation though, it would be to stay at the Tomich Inn in Glen Affric, or a nearby B&B. castle-wise there's plenty to choose from. Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness is one option. Edinburgh castle the most famous I guess, Stirling castle a lesser known alternative. Edinburgh best for museums. There's a Loch Ness monster museum near urqhuart castle!

It's a wee while since I was in Scotland and I'm childless, but hopefully this might help: http://www.visitscotland.com/see-do/family/

Hi! The best kid friendly museums are in Glasgow, although the Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh should keep them entertained for a few hours.

For day hikes, check out the Forestry Commission website (forestry.gov.uk) as they have great waymarked trails all over Scotland.

For castles look at the Historic Scotland and Visit Scotland websites. There are hundreds to choose from although Edinburgh and Stirling are the biggest and best known.

As far as an itinerary goes it might be helpful to know if you would prefer to see all the famous areas (Loch Ness, Skye etc) or if you fancy exploring some of the less well known places.
