Hi,

I am travelling to Scotland in August on my own and would love some advice on things to see in Oban and the island of Mull or the surrounding area. I will be travelling on public transit. I want to do some of the walks and see some of the scenery but am finding them listed as moderate or more difficult. I have cerebral palsy, walk with a cane and find uneven ground challenging at times. So why am I going to such a hilly place??? Love the beauty of it. Anyone have suggestions of easier walks or tours?

Have been to Newfoundland but travelled with someone who could help me when necessary. Any suggestions would be grately appreciated.

Am also going to Edinburgh and Plockton (huge fan of Hamish) if you have any suggestions on sites to see there. Started with my ticket to the tatoo and built my trip from there. The plan is Glasgow - Oban- Plockton- Edinburgh.

Thanks.

Kerrera is a beautifil place and is a short ferry ride from Oban. There is a circular walk of about six miles on landrover tracks with a cafe/ bunkhouse half way round.

Al;ternatively Lismore is an alternative island served by CalMac ferries with easier walking.

It will of course depend on how far you feel you can walk in comfort but the islands do give a feeling of remoteness.

If you wanting somewhere for overnight Coll / Tiree of even Barra.

Another word of support for the island of Kerrera - spectacular ruined Gylen Castle at southern end; teashop was closed when we visited. see http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/argyll/kerrera-gylen.shtml

More suggestions at http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/argyll/ Ben Cruachan is a nice hill, not far inland from Oban, but you'd probably need to hitch to start point. Or, get train one stop north to Connel Ferry and walk alongside sealoch on either north or south shore. The hill overlooking Oban is also worth a climb - not difficult, but gives good views out towards Mull under the right weather conditions. There's also Dunstaffnage Castle, a couple of miles north of Oban, and McCaig's Tower (circular folly with lots of arches) overlooking Oban town.

Ben Cruachan is NOT an easy walk rather a serious day out on the mountains and should not be contemplated by you..
I agree regarding Lismore and Kerrera.
On Mull, . Iona is worth a visit. Not sure what public transport is like getting there. There maybe organised tours from Oban.
People go to Plockton just to see Plockton.
I don't know what your interests are so can't add much about Edinburgh. Since you have Tattoo tickets you will be there during the festival so there will be a hell of a lot going on. I hope you have your accommodation already arranged. Holyrood Park, with Arthurs Seat , the extinct volcano within, is a very nice walk. The Botanical Gardens are worth a visit.

Iona is well set up for less-mobile people; there are elderly and disabled Christian visitors there every day. It's only a few yards from where the bus stops in Fionnphort to the ferry, and people will be helpful. There aren't many buses but it should be possible as a day trip from Oban.

Only the eastern side of Iona (where the abbey is, and up to the north end) and across the low-lying middle to the beach on the other side is likely to be feasible for you. The northeastern side and the southern end are rough and swampy, with trackless spots and fences to climb over.

If you stay in Fionnphort there are quite a few atmospheric but mostly level walks on the Mull side.
