Hi -
I will be in Scotland for 10 days in mid-May. I plan to rent a car for a week and drive north in the direction of Skye or Inverness and stay in B&Bs in small towns. My questions are:
- are there a lot of B&Bs available in these areas ?
- should I book in advance ? (I prefer to have a flexible itinerary)
- what is the price range ?

Not all small towns or villages on Skye (or in the highlands) have B&Bs so you will have to do your research in advance to determine where you can stay. Personally I would book in advance with Skye or other rural areas to avoid any hassle or missing out on a quality B&B.
Larger towns (like Inverness) normally have numerous B&Bs and I would not think it necessary to book in advance.
Prices range from £25-40 pppn.
Mid May? Won't be a problem just turning up as it's not the busy holiday period. But as #1 points out, if you want to stay at the better places, then book in advance.
But it will be no problem just to wing it. You might even get a bed for £20 (midweek) if you're willing to walk around and ask.

I would suggest phoning in the morning to arrange your accommodation for that night. B&Bs are very small businesses, so the owners need to know to have food ready, particularly during quieter times, such as parts of May. Note that Mon 4th and Mon 25th May are both bank holidays, with school half term 25th - 29th May. Not exactly mid May, though. Some B&Bs close during quieter periods.

Thanks for the advice.
Can anyone suggest a web site with a good list of B&Bs. All the ones I have found seem to be a bit sparse with a very limited selection.
Try the official Visit Scotland web site also have a look at the AA web site. The AA also sell a range of books on traveling in the UK, could be wothwhile purchasing one for your trip if you're not going to have ready access to the Internet - I think they do a B&B guide.

I've just returned from a few days in Scotland, staying at BBs. What we did was decide what areas we wanted to stay in, then went to the tourist information centre in Glasgow city centre and asked for brochures with tourist board-approved BBs. We then called ahead a day or two (or even same day a few hours before we expected to be there) and booked the rooms that way. Absolutely no problems, especially during the week. This bank holiday weekend for Edinburgh was the most difficult. In smaller towns and villages, it was simple.
We paid £25-£30 pppn, and were extremely pleased with the standard of rooms and service we got. The people running them were great, and only asked that we give an estimated time of arrival and to call if we were going to run late.
The visit Scotland booking service is great, I have even used it myself. They keep checking all the B&B's for you till they find one that's suitable, can either do it at a tourist info centre or over the phone.
I wouldn't necessarily agree with #1 about (no offence meant #1)
'Not all small towns or villages on Skye (or in the highlands) have B&Bs'
to a visitor. It is true that small places might not have one, but you're never more than a few miles from one and on Skye ? There are HUNDREDS.
