hi there

we're a couple with a small baby.

we're obliged to visit my husband's mum in edinburgh for the first week of April, so that she can carp, complain and tell us that we don't know how to look after our baby, live too far away in australia, have poor taste in music, clothes and careers, will never amount to anything, are turning the baby against her and that my husband takes after his useless father and gave her a pain in her back twenty nine years ago when she carried him for nine months and she's still got it.

normally, we would do this while staying in her enormous apartment in Grange, so that she could burst in on us in bed, burst in on us in the bathroom, shout at us, tell us the neighbours are plotting against her, and furiously smash crockery in the kitchen to demonstrate her anger at us.

however, we thought perhaps for the baby's sake we might stay elsewhere on this particular trip. we thought a short term let of a flat would be the way to go, but we can't seem to find anything that seems affordable. we've looked about on the internet but it all seems a bit executive and posh for us.

ideally we'd spend around 300 pounds for a week in some kind of quiet one bedroom apartment.

has anyone got any ideas about websites or agencies etc that aren't immediately obvious in a google search? is anyone going away for the first week in april and wants to sublet their flat?

any help or ideas would be gratefully received by us.

any failure to help would be gratefully received by my husband's mum, because it means we'll be forced to stay with her and would prove once and for all that we are too stupid and useless to get our own accommodation.

You want self catered or no?

It depends on how close you want to stay to where your mother in law lives. There are plenty of Holiday Inns in Edinburgh, however, I once stayed at the Victoria Park Hotel and that was a good price and a comfortable place.

#2 has the right idea. Or you could just buy her a chair to smooth things over.

yes, self catered ideally.

It's not everyone's style but hostels offer self-catering and usually cheaper than elsewhere? Possibly not an ideal location with baby but when we visited Edinburgh we used to stay at Cowgate Tourist Hostel (located on...the Cowgate!). Although a hostel it was actually a large building converted into a heap of 3 br flats. They rented out rooms or beds depending on what you were after and when we stayed for a couple of weeks and ended up in the long stay section there was a family staying with a small child.

Other hostels might also have long stay? You can find them pretty easily via SYHA or Scottish Independent Hostels.

Good luck - your MIL sounds like a gem!

Phew! Ian at edlets.com, there is a special (self catering) place reserved for you in heaven!

we now have a lovely 7 night booking in a flat in drummond st - not that we're telling the MIL the address of course.

flat - 325 pounds.

peace of mind - priceless.
