Hello!

I've looked around and can't seem to find a recent answer to this question. Apologies if there is one I missed!

I'm wondering what the job situation is currently like in Ireland. I'm planning to move there at the end of August / beginning of September with my boyfriend. I'm an American citizen who would be on a year long work visa through BUNAC. Boyfriend has Italian citizenship. So, we'd both be legal to work for the year we intend to stay, but we're wondering what our chances are of finding jobs. I have a degree in journalism and am currently working as a copywriter. Boyfriend is an engineer with about a year of related work experience. Aside from that we've both worked random jobs through college. (I have a bunch of retail experience and he's worked in all kinds of administrative positions.) We'd be willing to do anything that would pay our rent, and are willing to live anywhere in Ireland. For now we're planning on Dublin since it seems like it would have the most opportunities and would be a fun place to live, but we're definitely open to other suggestions. We're just excited to live somewhere new for a while and experience a new country. Any advice would be appreciated, as would any knowledge of the current economy/job availability.

Thanks!

You need to do more research yourself
the economy is'nt the best right now
unemployment is at 14%
for jobs see the likes of MONSTER.IE /
somewhere to live : DAFT.IE /

If you can sift out the irrelevant crap in this thread there is some very worthwhile and IMO still accurate information.

The job situation remains challenging. I think your best chance of employment may be Galway in the hospitality/retail sector and Dublin your second best option.

There is limited work to be had as a freelance sub-editor or reporter in the national print press. Apply to the news editors at the Irish Star, Evening Herald, Irish Daily Mail, Irish Independent and the Examiner. Two papers have closed down recently so work is scarce but freelancers can nearly always find something.

You could also contact the Media School at Dublin City University. Ask them if they are aware of any work going in the business-to-business press. You might get a job at Ironmongers' Weekly or something like that. You'll have to pester them as they will porobably ignore your first email or call.

To be honest your chances are slim, but if you contact people in a professional and persistent manner they might be able to help you out.

Thanks for the advice. That older thread is really helpful now that I know the situation is more or less the same two years later. It's also good to know that there is some hope of finding freelance writing jobs.

I'm not too concerned with the logistics of a work visa at this point; it seems as though BUNAC will be helpful in dealing with all of that when I come to it. For now I'll continue to look through job postings and try to get an idea of what my options will be. I was hoping to hear that finding jobs in hospitality/retail had become easier than the older threads indicate, but no such luck I guess!

Ireland isn't our only option, it just seemed like a good one since I can get a year long work visa just for being a recently graduated student. (Being an American is a pretty big disadvantage to long term stays elsewhere in Europe!) My boyfriend's American work visa will be running out soon, so we'll have to figure something else out or just head to Ireland and hope at least one of us can find work. We've got enough time to get some savings behind us and do a bunch more research so we can go about this in a semi-responsible way. Thanks again for the help!
