My 18 year old son and I will be traveling to Ireland in late July early August 2011. We are flying in and out of Dublin and will have 7 full days. We'd like to go to Connemara and do not want to rent a car while we are in Ireland. What is the best way to get to Galway (bus or train?) and does anyone know of a good group for organizing a walk/bike trip of the area? Thanks much for your help.

irishrail.ie are very well connected to Galway.
they leave from dublin heuston (you can connect from the airport to this railway station or get the tram-luas there). They run a few trains a day.

Im not sure why you would want to go to connemara, there is not alot there unless you have family or know the area well. Galway itself has alot of good hiking and bike trails and once off the train it wont be hard to find a tourist office!

Other options for biking.hiking include cork region, killearny and wicklow (if you dont want to hire a car these are well connected by the train).

good luck~

Travelling to Connemara consider renting a car
as its hard enough to get around.

#2 raises some very good points. I think you are better heading to Galway and I think you are best going straight there from the airport by bus, if you go to the airport website there a re a number of buses which do this trip. If you book ahead you can get similar prices fro trains compared to buses and I would use that if possible for the return journey if you are planning to spend some time in Dublin

Google wil lhelp you with info on yours available in Galway as will their tourist office..

It is possible to do some self-organised walks using public transport - search Christopher Somerville on independent.ie for a sample of the newspaper's Walk of the Week features which give quite good directions.
