My beautiful young bride and I want to go to Ireland for our honeymoon. I have been before but she has not. Trip will take place May 25-31 and we'll have a car. I would prefer to stay in a secluded quaint rental cottage. Does anyone have any ideas on the best place to stay for 5 nights and use as a base for day trips? I was thinking County Claire. Any suggestions on accomodations would be appreciated.

Don't know what you're really looking for, but Kinvara or Ballyvaughan are both cute little villages, but there would be limited nightlife. In Galway, I like the village of Cong, and you could make many day trips from there. Ashford Castle hotel is beautiful with beautiful grounds if you plan to really splurge out for your honeymoon. It's very expensive. If you really want to be remote, the manorhouse/hotel Ballynahinch near Maam Cross in Connemara is lovely. It has beautiful gardens, and lots of hiking available. From there you could visit the Aran Islands, Galway City, Clifden, Kylemore Abbey, etc.

I have been County Clare many times. It is truly beautiful and not that far from Galway and Connemara, two counties that'll have you in tears - for all the right reasons.
There is a music festival in Co. Clare every summer that I go to, called the Willy Clancy Festival - in Miltown Malbay. It's just a wonderously unspoilt little town, heading down towards the S.W. and right on the coast, with endless sand dunes and so much close by too. The little inns there are not expensive to stay in, the food and local beers are wonderful, the walking is easy and there's a bus that will take you to Ennis, where you can get a train (with no more than one change) to just about anywhere in Ireland.
Happy travels (they will be!!!!).... Kriss - Manchester.

Here is a good link to "special holiday homes"

I've stayed at the main house at Delphi Lodge (approx 9 o clock on the map) and can highly recommend it...if you like charming country house comfort and sharing a dining table with possibly 10 or so other guests.

They have a near-by cottage (Wren cottage) which I haven't stayed in ...but I think you can have your meals in the big house...it is isolated in a big valley...but stunning wild scenery...just the place to be snuggled up in bed with a roaring fire...get up , go for dinner and a chat and back to bed!!!
