how has ireland changed with the influx of germans to the west coast/county mayo and clare and economic development generally, how do people feel about it? has the west coast developed like in some kind of crazy way like over the past 20 years that the past 2500 years didn't see such development? how do people feel about that? will tourism survive or whatever?

second question: do guinness chain pubs dilute the brand? my opinion: yes, very much so.

The Irish west had an influx of Germans?

Also, Im quite confused about Guinness 'chain pubs' as you call them. What are they?

do Guinness chain pubs dilute the brand?

Are you referring to a chain in the UK like Wetherspoons? If so, why would they do that? It would be down to the individual bar manager to open the keg and water the Guinness down. How would he profit from doing that? Plus, you've got to know what you're doing with a pressurised keg and quite frankly it's not worth the hassle to water it down.

Now cask beers and spirits are a different matter - but again it is very unlikely to happen at a "chain" pub. A landlord/owner has a lot to gain by doing this financially, but the penalties if caught mean it's a big risk. Unannounced visits to licensed premises by HMRC are commonplace.

I'm Irish and my father has worked in the bar trade for 40 years.

1) There are no Guinness chain pubs in Ireland. There may be people who own a couple of pubs but they're not a 'chain'.

2) I wasn't sure what the OP meant by 'dilute' the brand, but if he means physically water the drink down, then no, that does not happen.

I dont think there was ever an influx of germans in the west coast! the west coast is still as "rural" as ever. I noticed however MANY german au-pairs (german students who come to ireland for several months, up to a year to help families in return for accomodation/food/spending money) but they are based mostly in Cork and Dublin.

There are no chain pubs in ireland! thank you vodkajihad! most pubs here are familly owned, and those that arent are at least private and unique.

By dilute the brand i assume you mean devalue it? or make it less admirable? that probably would happen if Guiness chain pubs ever do come into existance. Guiness then would probably taste like the canned stuff you get in the states. which, by the way, is not Guiness i'm sure you know :)

I can't understand how people are actually taking this question seriously enough to answer it. The original post contains six questions, each more bizarre and clueless than the next. It's like some not so bright schoolkid trying to do a project who hasn't done the foggiest amount of research and then ends up asking ridiculously wide and unanswerable questions. Compare the past twenty years to the previous 2500 years...I mean what sort of a framework is that? So let me see, the previous 2500 years was one contiguous blobby mass of history that just miraculously came to an arbitrary end about twenty years ago, at which time some 'crazy' development boom took place that made the west coast look like Atlantic City! Yeah right.

Will tourism survive or whatever? I mean, what do you think OP? Whatever! And as for the Guiness chain pubs...I know let's ask a completely uninformed question and then answer it for myself, just making myself feel nice, warm and fuzzy in my generally confused state.

I think the signature says it all folks! This has to be a joke - and you know what, I guess I've become a victim of it myself.

LOL @ barryhennessy. That was my reaction when I first read the OP last night. The only difference was that I couldn't be arsed to point out the idiocy. Well done, Barry, for blowing away all the fog.

That really sums it up perfectly, doesn't it? There are no Guinness chain pubs and yet the OP has a view on them. Terrific.

as to question 1: "I can't understand how people are actually taking this question seriously enough to answer it. The original post contains six questions, each more bizarre and clueless than the next. It's like some not so bright schoolkid trying to do a project who hasn't done the foggiest amount of research and then ends up asking ridiculously wide and unanswerable questions." yes that sounds about right.

as to question 2:uh, i meant in the united states. of course, i really should have mentioned that. i also should have mentioned why'd anyone give a fig. which, in the clear light of day, i really don't know. i guess dilute the brand in the u.s. is what i mean. that's a marketing buzzword. and who cares. "hey, what do you all think about boeing's marketing strategy in indonesia"? one could ask on the usa forum. everyone would say: who cares. that's what happens when you mix alcohol and public forums. :( (oh also in brewing it isn't "diluting" it is "watering down" but this happens at the point of sale and not at the brewery (unless adding water is part of the process after fermentation which many brewers do to save fermenter space) but that isn't even what we are talking about so who cares.)

well it ended up being a laugh. :(.
