The Purty Kitchen in Monkstown, a 20-minute DART ride south of the centre does good food and live music and it is a nice pub with mainly locals visiting. It's not always traditional though so you should check the schedule. Says on their website that they do a trad. session every Tuesday.

They also have a branch in town.

I also found this: http://www.discoverdublin.ie/musicalpubcrawl.html but have no idea what it's like. If you want to avoid the tourists you could just check which pubs they go to. Might be a good laugh, though!

ok might try purty kitchen, I have to bring out an American friend and her French husband, so a good food place would be good, Johnnie Fox food is top notch but its just a bit out of the way

Another good pub for food and beer is the Porterhouse which is on Parliament St by the river just off the main Temple Bar drag. They are a microbrewery so if there's no music playing you could instead distract yourselves with the interesting and wide-ranging selection of beers.
