The very best way of flaming up any thread on the UK & Ireland branch, as far as I could see since I joined the forum, is to question the meaning of the British Isles ... Always works.

What does "Dubin" mean in DubinNYC? Is this a cultural and historical Irish version of "Dublin"? Sorry for my ignorance...it is the Union Jack in our flag that causes this ignorance...

As the lone person who recommend Dublin City in her Top Ten, I want to defend myself! First I'm not from Dublin and have no affiliations with the place, I'm a proud culchie but I think it's a great city from a tourist point of view. I would say spend 2 days there at most and avoid Temple Bar like the plague at night. The most important museums are in Dublin (Archaeology museum on Kildare st. the Dead Zoo on Merrion Sq, National Art Gallery) Temple Bar can be fun to walk around on a saturday morning for the open air market. Christchurch Cathedral, St. Patrick's Cathedral, St. Stephen's Green, go to the theatre. I just think that's it's important to spend some time in the capital city of a country. I'm not advocating people come to Dublin for a week and don't leave Temple Bar and Grafton St.

But people don't seem to care when Irish people get offended when referred to as being British/English/part of the UK/British Isles....they seem to see it all as a bit of a joke and think we're all taking it too seriously, which REALLY really annoys me!!! I thinkit's just cultural/political or whatever you want to call it ignorance on their behalf!

You don't believe ........ just like you probably refer to Derry as Londonderry, Myanmar as Burma, Sri Lanka as Ceylon etc etc.
