Also worth noting, you usually get deported to your home country, not where you originated if you enter illegally.

Simple answer is that citizens of the UK or Republic of Ireland DO NOT need a passport to travel between the 2. I live in Northern ireland and on the last 2 trips I've done to England have used photo driving licence for ID with no problems. One trip was flying with Ryan Air and the other was by ferry with Irish Ferries. As some peoiple ahve already said, all immigration have to do is key your name into the computer to find out that you're UK citizen, that's if they bother.

Southern Ireland is not the UK hence you need a passport to enter, you are going to an International destination

Apart from the Common Travel Area, which means that you have a legal right to enter without a passport, but only if you are a citizen of one of the two nations in question. And how do you prove that you are a citizen, and so do not need a passport? Generally by showing your passport.
