hey,

sorry in advance cos I'm sure there's plenty of posts on this but none are coming up in my search and I should be studying for exams rather than looking for Dublin accomodation, so.....

Any recommendations for good & relatively cheap hostels in Dublin in mid-July?

Good means:
clean, friendly, has a common area, storage, cheap/free internet, central, easily accesible, possibly has parking cos we may rent a car, maybe has a bar/restaurant/free breakfast.

we will be 4 maybe 5 people so a place with 4/5 bed dorms which we could book for the group would be good.

cheap means....cheap.

Cheers,

Dikla

Cheap means nothing. Chuck a EUR figure on it.

And this clean, friendly, has a common area, storage, cheap/free internet, central, easily accesible, possibly has parking cos we may rent a car, maybe has a bar/restaurant/free breakfast is not a hostel, it sounds like a 3 star hotel.

You might want to try again.

I've stayed at both Abigail's Hostel and Paddy's Palace recently. Abigail's cost less than Paddy's, but Paddy's had much nicer facilities inside and a safe atmosphere. Paddy's had brekkie (v basic) included in the price. Beware of the rooms though - some of the ones with lots of beds in them are a bit special to say the least!

wow djkemp thanks so much for taking the time out to respond in an entirely unhelpful and negative manner. My ideal criteria is based on my extensive travels and stays in hostels around the world so it's not really unrealistic based on what I've experienced so far. YOU might want to try again, like so:

Your criteria for a hostel in Dublin exceeds the normal standards, which are normally (fill in the blanks). As for cheap could you be more specific about a price range? Now, how hard was that to say something in a nice manner?

Thank you minibean for a helpful response. I will look into those 2 places.

Let me clarify that what I classify as good is the 'ideal', however if standards are lower in Dublin I will settle for less as long as it's clean, safe, no bed bugs, central.

I am not from Europe and would have no clue about Euro prices, my idea of cheap is a relative concept, ie on the lower scale of available prices.

I heartily recommend the Globetrotters Tourist Hostel. The free full Irish breakfast is absolutely wonderful!

I have found that a lot of hostels (with the exception of parking) have common areas, cheap internet, restaurants/cafes (basically, the hostel bar is a café through the day) and generally they are relatively accessible to public transport. It’s not a ‘hotel’ at all. I have no idea about Dublin hostels - I am thinking more in general terms - but asking about these features is quite reasonable I think.

#3, no worries, any time you want to be put straight on the best way to get information let me know. You won't get a hostel with what you have asked for, and ask for these things is what you did. If you do research and give a price range people are more able to help.

Surprisingly enough, the An Oige hostel ticks most of your boxes:
clean - yes
friendly - yes
has a common area - yes: games room, kitchen and dining room, plus seperate dining room, plus lounge area
storage - yes, but it costs 1.25 euro to put stuf fin there, I think total charge
cheap/free internet - free wifi, had internet terminals, but not so hot but 1 euro/hour places not far away
central, easily accesible - mountjoy street, 7 minutes from the top of O'Connel Street, with various buses one block away
possibly has parking - yes
bar/restaurant/free breakfast - has limited free breakfast and you can buy extras, no bar but a booze shop two doors away.

Had the added bonus of a Spanish choral group when I was there, quite delightful, and I'm not into that sort of music.

Cost around 20 euro..

#7 it does look good but OP should know it is not central (as is nothing above Parnell St), breakfast is optional extra, it doesn't have parking as part of hostel, (as you say) no bar, and no cheap internet unless they have a laptop but it does tick a couple of other things and EUR15-20 may be considered cheap.

Mountjoy Street hostel not central??? Depends what you think the centre of Dublin is I suppose, but the majority of Dubliners would reckon OConnell St./GPO and the hostel is only 5/10 mins walk. Not in an exciting/busy/touristy area of town, granted but, Diklab83, don't reject it just because of djpkemp. (probably a Southsider?!)
