Thanks you for all your great suggestions! Well I think have decided on our hotels. We are celebrating our anniversary so we are splurging. I just need to figure out how many nights in each.
We are going to stay at;
The Merrion or The Shelbourne in Dublin I would like to visit Glenalough and possibly Wicklow if there is time.
Sheen Falls Lodge in Kenmare, County Kerry see Killarney and Dingle and drive the Ring of Kerry weather permitting.
Ashford Castle in Cong, County Mayo see Connemara and Galway and and enjoy the castle and surrounding area. We have decided not to visit the beautiful island due to the season.
I would like to visit Kilkenny on the way as well.I hear what you are saying about driving in Dublin and we are trying to figure that out.
I am thinking about 3 nights in Dublin since the first day will be all travel, then 3 nights at Sheen Falls and 4 at Ashford Castle.This way we are not packing our stuff up every day and changing locations and if we don't feel like taking a day trip we can easily enjoy the area surrounding our hotel. Has anybody stayed at any of these locations? Thanks again for your help.

When you check the rates for these hotels, be aware that they can be per person, not per room. Four nights at Ashford is quite a splurge! But they may have some good rates being October and a down economy. It is definitely more relaxing not to be packing up every day, and with these locations you want to have time to enjoy them while you are there.
Personally, I have not stayed at Ashford Castle, but have stayed in Cong, and there is plenty to occupy your time. The hotel has many amenities, including a falconry, and within walking distance are enough things to spend 2 days visiting.

Thanks Frida,
I had not thought about that in a hotel, I know that can apply in a B&B. All of these hotels have reduced rates at this time.Do you think it matters whether we spend 4 nights in Cong or Kenmare. Both areas look beautiful with many things to do.
I haven't got time to look to see if your hotels are listed on http://www.booking.com/ but check if they're there because it's a great website for discounted hotel rooms.

Thanks for your help. Bookings.com great suggestion! The special rates we received at Ashford and Sheen Falls were 3 nights for the price of 2 and some meals thrown in. The idea of not spending too much time in a car has been altered slightly. My husband decided to surprise me with trip to Paris on the back end! He has us departing from Cork instead of Shannon because the flights were so much cheaper.I was planning on seeing Kilkenny and Cashir on the way from Dublin to Kenmare. I really don't want to miss these two locations if possible. My itinerary looks like this,what do you think? The alternate is 3 nights in Dublin then train to Galway. Best Maggiew
