I am a 65 year old single man who wants to visit Ireland. What would be the most economical and best way to see the beautiful
Country of Ireland. Which is better; fly in to Shannon or Dublin? What iternary would you sugggest for 7 days? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

#1 he's seen pictures. I reckon Sophie Dahl of the 1999-2002 era is drop dead grogeous, never been there though! And have you seen the guy she goes out with? James Callum? I'm much taller than him!!!! Ahem.
Seven days, if what you want is the beauty of the countryside and you only have seven days then the only reason to go to Dub is to go to Wicklow. In brief, into Shannon and south down the west coast would be good giving you the 'emerald' bit of the emerald isle and the rugged coastal. A couple of days in Galway (Cliff of Moher, the Burrens), KIllarney (the ring, Dingle) and Cork will give you the scenery you want and you can do day trips on couch tours from these places if you don't have a car. If you want to drop inon Dub you can get a bus from Cork to Dublin. Ireland is, unforutnately, best toured by car for maximum results particualrly if you are only looking at a week.
It does also depend on when as while you have a chance of getting wet most of the time, the chances increase between October and Easter.
Do a search on this branch for littlefox who has given a great run down on all Ireland has to offer.

Dublin airport is very difficult and time-consuming to negotiate. Shannon is a small airport, very quick and easy. Shannon is also near the Southwest and West of Ireland, 2 areas that many people consider the most beautiful and interesting.
How you plan your trip depends on what it is you want to do and see. Also, what kind of transportation do you plan to use? Using a rental car will definitely be the easiest and best way to get to rural, scenic areas. If that is beyond your expense, you will need to visit areas that are served by public transport and tours. Also, if using public transport, you would probably travel less and cover less territory.
Can you give a little more information on what you want and how you plan to travel?

I suggest a CIE, or such all inclusive tour...I am sure you will like the convenience and comforts at the age of 65....I would do it as I know how travel packages are superior...at an older age...beyond backpacking etc..and the hotels are usually good value and food is decent enough...also, you will have travel mates? CIE may look pricey but the options are excessive with car rentals or trains and busses as well as looking for places to stay..just an idea!

Fly to Shannon then head down to the Dingle Peninsular. There is plenty there to keep you busy for a week.

Most airlines facilitate an itinerary that begins in either Dublin or Shannon and ends at the other.
If you are travelling after July of this year then into Dublin and out of Shannon will be the most popular option. This is because US Border protection are opening a full pre-clearance service at Shannon. This means that you can arrive in the USA from Shannon and not have to clear customs. This is of particular benefit to people who are making a connection in the USA as they will now be able to check their luggage right through to it's final destination and will avoid having to pick it up in the airport of entry into the USA to clear customs.
