I will be staying in Killiney near Dun Laoghaire south of Dublin for a week beginning Saturday, January 31st. I will have a car. Two questions:

I'd like to go into Dublin at least a couple times during my trip. What is the best/easiest/cheapest way to enter the city? Can I park near the outskirts in a free lot and take public transport? Park in the city within walking distance of most shops and attractions? I have spent a week in the city before and seen the biggest sights, so don't need to spend all my time there.

Where might I find friendly places to hear local music closer to Killiney for evenings out? I went to a local place in Edinburgh once that was having an open "jam" night and it was one of the best experiences ever! I'd like to find something like that or a nice local group playing traditional music.

Thanks much!

P.S. Any other suggestions of places to eat, shop, see in this area is appreciated. I like quirky, one of a kind places with history, small unique shops, fun or different new experiences. I don't care about nightlife in the clubbing sense or fancy restaurants as I will be on my own.

The DART train service will take you from Killiney train station into Dublin City (the 3 main stations in Dublin are Pearse, Tara St. and Connolly Station) in about 25-30 minutes and a return journey will cost your about 4.30/EUR or so. There is a car park next to Killiney train station but it fills up quickly with morning commuters.

Having been to Dublin before, I am not too sure how well you know the area you will be staying but the small town of Dalkey next to Killiney is really nice, quite historic and an interesting place to explore.

Dalkey would be better for a few drinks at night or the town of Dun-Laoghaire which has a few nice pubs but I find the town itself rather dead as night.

Enjoy!

Try going the other direction from town on the DART to Bray/Greystones. There is a really nice walk along the cliff from Bray to Greystones that takes around 1-2 hours if the weather is ok and there's a real nice pub at the end of the walk in Greystones.

As noted, nightlife is kinda dead in Dun Laoghaire - Dalkey will be your best bet.

I'd recommend Bray for nightlife - wide range of pubs on offer on the seafront.
