If a car rental is made in Northern Ireland can it be taken into to south without any problems? I have been told that car rentals are cheaper in the North than in the south. Can anyone verify this information for me because of personal experience.

Yes they can be taken into the Republic of Ireland without any problem. In the case of tourists they expect that to occur.

You may expect to pay extra cross-border insurance if you are travelling between the two. This is often paid separately at time of hire. Certain companies such as National included it as standard but my understanding that it is now a supplementary charge. Do check the small print since it can make a significant difference to your quote especially if you only expect to be on the other side of the border for a couple of days out of say a 10-day stay.

I know with Budget they have a Cross Border Coverage fee which is £22 if you intend on taking the car into Ireland from Northern Ireland.

If you want to pickup the car in the north and return to the south there is a different fee for that which is included in the quote.

Prices in the north aren't always cheaper, you should get prices for pickup in the south if it suits you, a lot depends on the dates you're traveling

We used Hertz as I'm pretty sure they didn't have a cross border fee (although check, it was a while ago).

Not sure about price comparisons though as for our trip we needed to hire the car in NI and return to NI.

What #2 said. You won't have a problem taking it over the border but do let the company know. On my last trip to NI, we were asked at the rental desk at the airport if we intended taking the car over the border, as they would have to charge us extra insurance if we wanted to do that. I think that was Avis btw, but I presume all of the rental companies will do the same.

Thanks all for your responses. They've helped out a lot.

"michelangelofan" -- I'm not expecting any problems. Just doing some trip planning and trying to get a handle on costs, hidden costs, etc. If there is a problem going between north and south, it helps being aware of them so we can plan accordingly. Want to make the most of every vacation day that I get abroad.
