Probably not the right place to ask this question but I'll give it a shot. I need to find details of my grandad's birth and according to my dad's birth certificate he was born on 'Caloney Island' Ireland. Now I have searched high and low on the internet and cannot find a Caloney Island anywhere it just keeps on coming up with Coney Island. He was born 1890 and my dad was born in 1921. Does anyone at all know of a Caloney Island in Ireland that was around during that time? Or any ideas were I could find the info about it? I've searched for 'islands of ireland' and can't find anything on it! I just need to know where abouts in Ireland it is. Any info would be great.
Remember people enter data on birth certificates and maybe the person who did your pa's couldn't spell. Or maybe that's the gaelic spelling. AS I understand it all births were recorded in family parishes as well. Does the birth certificate note the county he was born in?

Yes, can be like finding a needle in a haystack but the search and the mystery is part of the fun. Good luck to you.

I'm going to suggest one of two things:
1) Are you sure that's what it says on the birth certificate/record? It would often have a county and parish noted as well.
2) Ask a similar question on a genealogy board rather than a travel one.
Some places changed name after independence but this is not a place I have heard of and if google produces no hits at all that makes me suspicious.

I'd guess it should be McAloney - so it's the where the family lived

ON the top of the birth cert there should be a section that reads: Births registered in the district of ......... in the Superintendants Registars district of .................... in the county of..................
and then the section where the details of parents dates etc are filled. If you only have a short photocopy of the birth cert this might be missing but you could try the Registry Office of Births,Marriages and Deaths in Dublin for a full copy, but not on-line. If you want to pm me I'll see if I cann help a little more.

Thanks everyone for the input! think I've got it figured out... as I was flicking through some of the linked websites I found a scanned copy of his military registration from 1916 where he wrote his town of birth as 'colloney co. sligo' but with his old english hand writing it looks like 'caloney is. sligo'. They must have used that reference for my dad's birth cert (which is australian so doesn't include county or anything) causing a shoddy translation of Caloney Island, Ireland on his birth certificate. Gah no wonder i couldn't find it!

Well done.
My family encountered a similar thing with a greatx3 convict grandfather who just vanished. All records after his deportation, and some just before, used his nickname rather than his full name which we had been searching with. Once we had that all the pieces just fell into place.
Collooney Co Sligo, sometimes with just one "l". What's the surname ? I have been tracing family members around that area. If you try www.familysearch.org you might find some more records.

Yeah definitely Mark it's all starting to click into place now, so relieved I found that missing piece! Surname's May. I found him on that familysearch website but all it's giving me are his citation and record number's. All the rest of the info is blank eg DOB and mother's maiden name which is what i need :(
