My sister and I will be in Yorkshire for just a few days--our first time in England. We are flying in and out of Leeds. We have hotel reservations in Thirsk for the first three nights, then in Shipley for the last night. We will have a rental car.
Does this seem like a reasonable itinerary or is it too ambitious, i.e. too much driving?
Day 1 - Arrive in Leeds, drive to Thirsk, settle in
Day 2 - Herriot Museum and other Thirsk sights…
A buddy and I are looking to fly over this May to hike the Pennine Way. I've just ordered a couple of guide books but waiting on the mail to be able to study more. If we fly to Manchester (non-stop from Atlanta looks best), would it be best to take ground transport back there for the return flight or can we take a few extra days to go into Scotland and fly back to Manchester reasonably from a Scottish airport? we are returning in Brits in the VERY early stages of planning to buy a VW combie or similar vehicle & travel, first around the UK for 6 months or so, then on to the continent for a year or two.
Where is the best place to buy one in the UK? Are there any particular magazines that the sellers use etc?

I am flying into Manchester and will be taking the train to Preston. I get in around 6pm so I'm thinking I will stay overnight in Manchester and get the train in the morning in order not to put out my hosts for my short stay in Preston. Which train station would be the best? Can anyone recommend a nice hotel near the train station so I can get to the train easily? Also, I need to be able to get from the Manchester airport to this hotel fairly easily.

I have recently posted threads in the Eastern Europe forum, I am starting in Budapest and thinking of heading across Europe towards the UK (instead of doing a loop for six weeks).
I was thinking I might end up in London. I'm just wondering, is it possible to get last minute flights- two or three days beforehand? I don't want to be stranded there and not make my flight home from Budapest!
This will be by the first week of June.
