Hi

Can anyone give me advice on how to travel from Whitby to York, in North Yorkshire by some form of public transport?

I can't hire a car there and the train and National Express service travel a very circuitous route.

Is there a local bus service connecting the two towns.

We are probably traveling on a Saturday or Sunday.

Thank you

As mentioned in FAQs, UK has various public transport planning websites eg http://www.transportdirect.info/Web2/JourneyPlanning/JourneyPlannerInput.aspx

You can add you own exact start and end points on the dates you expect to travel to check timestables. Whitby and York both have rail stations. Hope that helps.

One other option, which probably won't be shown by standard public transport enquiry, but which could be fun, would be to use North York Moors Railway (heritage steam engines) http://www.nymr.co.uk/planning-your-visit/how-to-find-us/ from Whitby to Pickering, and then get more conventional public transport to York. Like most heritage railways, NYMR has more journeys at weekends than during traditional working week.

Hi Copepod

Thank you for the information. I have checked trains and NE coaches but they do not travel direct - they take over 2 1/2 hours to travel what should be about a 1 hour 15 minute journey..

I like the idea of the NYMR so have contacted them.

Cheers

As an alternative if you have time, Whitby to Scarborough is only about 15 miles. From there you can get a direct train to York that takes under an hour.

Learn to say 'Thank you' in the local language.
The natives like that.

There is a regular through bus operated by Yorkshire Coastliner about every 2 hours - all you need do is google whitby york bus

Many of the buses on this route are double deck and the view from upstairs crossing the North York Moors between Whitby and Pickering makes this journey one of Britain's most scenic bus rides in my opinion

Thnak you guys

As we travel on a Sunday the service is very limited.

I think I will follow the suggestion of lennythelion and see Whitby as a day trip from Robin Hoods Bay where we stay the night prior. Then take the shorter bus ride to Scarborough and the very manageable train trip to York from there.

Great idea. Thank you very much for all of your suggestions
