It's gotta be the Lake District sorry. It's just so damned beautiful!

I'd recommend Windermere and Grasmere. You can do some walking too. There are buses all over the lakes and it's a really relaxing place to go. One thing I love about the lake district is its character. It hasn't gone all modern like everywhere else seems to be going.

I second Yorkshire. I managed to see the abbeys at Fountains and Rivelaux via public transport ( ok, I did take a cab from Thrisk to Rivelaux , but it was November so less buses ).

Whitby was wonderfull.

But again, I was there in November. It might be more crowded and so not as nice in summer.

Thirded Yorkshire. Harogate, Knaresborough, York, Whitby and Scarborough are all navigable by train. You can get to Ripon (and Fountains Abbey) by bus from Harrogate.

Also there is a bus from Thirsk to Ripon.

Also a bus from Thirsk to Helmsley, from Helmsley you can walk to Rivealaux abbey.
