Does anyone have suggestions on a region crammed with interesting villages/towns that are not too hard to navigate between via train & bus?
A bit of history, some interesting pubs/bars, a few shops, a bit of beautiful scenery there/on the way wouldn't go amiss.
My friend suggests Cornwall? Is it navigable via train & public bus? We are coming from London.
Any other suggestions for areas much appreciated, don't really mind where we go as long as it is unique and they sell things by the pint :)

Derbyshire? The train service is pretty crap, but the buses routes are extensive and excellent, and there are loads of nice towns and villages, and great scenery. If you're coming between now and early July, you can go to the well dressings too.

I'm fond of east Yorkshire which I've always enjoyed carfree. The historic city of York, the coast from Whitby to Scarborough and the moors and wolds inland. It's generally a quieter area than Cornwall and offers more of interest. Certainly less overrun with tourists in comparison.
Essex. Loads of history, countryside, coastline, shops, castles and enough pubs to shake a stick at. All with excelent transport links and right next door to Kent.

Parts of Cornwall would be fine to explore by bus and train. If you based yourself somewhere like Truro, you can explore most of West Cornwall quite easily (Penzance, Falmouth, St.Ives, Helston, Newquay, St.Agnes & so on). You could also try getting the ferry to places like St.Mawes & Falmouth from there too which are lovely trips to do.
