I am going for a week for a series of lectures on a few Shakespearean histories. I will have a lot of time left over and I am going mostly alone. A gay friend is going to meet me for two days, but otherwise I will be alone. Any suggestions? Besdies the obvious tourist show, which I have done before, actually. I will see plays and go to some lectures but I could use some advice. I am not too good alone at sniffing out something beyond the common tourist routine. L

You could head into Birmingham. Visit the jewellry quarter. Go to the Art Gallery, visit Aston Hall. Leamington Spa is a great small town - georgian style but 21st century vibe. Wander around Jephson Gardens. Endless places to visit in Warwickshire - Hidcote manor for gorgeous gardens, Kenilworth for the castle.

If you are going in the next few days you should keep an eye on flooding problems in Stratford Upon Avon.

Tewkesbury Abbey isn't too far for a day trip. It's noted in at least one of Shakespeare's histories.

Stratford is pretty small but in a great place for lots of day trips. If you have car I'd suggest:
Baddesley Clinton, Charlecote Park and Packwood House are very nice National Trust Houses, most with a lot of Tudor & Elizabethan history that might appeal to you National Trust homepage
Check out the Cotswolds. Drink tea, eat cake and admire the gentle English scenery (if it hasn't all floated away…)
Kenilworth Castle, haunting ground of Elizabeth I
If you're using public transport get yourself a bus and train timetable and:
Get to Warwick and visit the castle, then hop on a bus (or walk) to Leamington Spa for a few shops, restaurants, the Jephson Gardens (pretty Victorian park thingy) and a small-town art gallery. If it's a nice day, I'd recommend hiring a boat at St Nicholas's park in Warwick and rowing past the castle
It would be very easy to do a day trip to London (Marylebone) from Stratford if you got up early. You could check out the Globe theatre
Visit Birmingham for good shops, art galleries, museums etc
I live around there so PM me if you have any questions or want more details. Have fun!
