I'd recommend posting on the Gumtree. People will always have a spare room for you to crash in ;) if you start looking on the gumtree about 6 weeks before you head over then you should be ok. Look for places in Salford too. It's grottier but near the presinct is within walking distance (or 5-10 mins by bus) to the city centre. Salford would be cheaper too.
