A bit confused: the path website shows a moderate walk from Tintagel to Port Gaverne; however, Schofield, Stedman, & Newton's guide indicates that the going is challenging. What's the scoop? Can a reasonably fit woman complete this section of the path?

As a "reasonably fit woman" who has walked many of the mid Cornwall sections of the SW Coastpath I would say "yes". The furthest I have walked on one day was from Mevagissey to Fowey (prob around 13/14 miles) - both this and your walk are billed as strenuous on the SW Coastpath webpage - I would agree with "strenuous" but far from impossible! Take a big bottle of water, adequate packed lunch and enjoy the pub at the other end!

I'd take my 9 year old along it without a second thought, though I would think about how far I was making her walk. Challenging only in the sense that there are lots of steep sections which are hard work to the unfit. But it's most definitely a footpath you walk along. The official coast path never includes dodgy narrow ways along cliff faces and pointy rock ridges, though they are available in places for those who enjoy them.
