What are your 'MUST SEES' and 'DON'T BOTHER' lists for south England. In April my wife and I will be in South England for just under 2 weeks in April of 2008. We have seen the Cantibury area before, but want to get a diffrent view from the folks who have visted and live in the area. We are thinking of train as our travel option but may rent a car for a few days. May go into London for a few days too. Ideas?
Read the FAQ, lots of ideas, none of which are don't bothers.
It depends on where you are based + your mode of transport available. If you (eg) are based in Canterbury, then you are farked for making day trips out of the likes of Cambridge, Oxford, Stratford Upon Avon, Ironbridge, Warwick Castle, Bath etc. We kinda need to know where you're based, how long of the 2 weeks you'll be based there, what your budgets and interests are and whether you need to relax at the beginning to take out a spot of jet lag first.

Outside of London, some of my places that are worth visiting are:
Lavenham, Suffolk – for Medieval timber framed buildings.
Rye – an enchanting small town.
Bath – for stone buildings and a gorgeous setting.
Ely – for its amazing cathedral.
Warwick Castle – fabulous castle with more than enough to keep you entertained for the day.
If you are into gardens, then:
Stowe – immense landscape garden (and the school is worth a visit).
Hidcote and Kiftsgate – 2 virtually adjacent gardens in the north Cotswolds
Must sees are down to where your interests lie. Alton Towers could be a must see attraction so could Lord’s Cricket Ground, Paul McCartney’s childhood home or the Cerne Abbas Giant!
However, rather than stringing together a list of must see places and spending an exhausting fortnight travelling the country, in my opinion it would be better focus on a few areas and visit the attractions local to those areas. Some of the places in my above list are virtually impossible to visit by public transport and travelling by train between many of them would involve train to London, changing stations and a train out of London.
A possible itinerary would be (as you’ve already been to Kent – I’ve excluded it) :
4/5 days in London – allowing you to visit places in the capital and perhaps 1 or 2 days out of London.
Few days in Leamington or Warwick. Possible trips to Warwick Castle, Stratford, Kenilworth, Oxford.
Few days in Wiltshire. Possible trips to Avebury, Lacock, Bath.
Possibly even a few days in Devon (Torquay?). Visting Torquay, Brixham, Totnes, Dartmouth..
Finally, a couple of don’t bothers:
Stonehenge (go to Avebury instead)
Runnymede

You could head west to Bristol and Bath. Bath is fascinating for you Georgian architecture (Though a little over-rated) while Bristol is actually a real city, with equally wonderful architecture in Clifton. Basing yourself there you can get out easily to Bradford-on-Avon, Cheddar, Wells, Glastonbury and the Wye Valley both by public transport and by car. And they can organise trips to Stonehenge, although I concur that Avebury is far more interesting. Also, the New Forest is a wonderful area of heathland, pine enclosures and deciduous woods and the Cranbourne Chase is just on the doorstep, one of the least visited and most beautiful areas of Southern England. And from there you can get down to the Isle of Purbeck and the Jurassic Coast in Dorset, one of England's few Natural World Heritage Areas.
