Check out the tfl website for details of last trains and journey planning etc but I suspect, depending how long it takes you to get out and what terminal you are dealing with, that tube trains are likely to be a non-starter but there is a two bus option from T4 at just after midnight which might work but beyond that, from what tfl provides, it is a bit of a busted flush.

In terms of other transport hints, buy an Oyster card for use on buses, shorter journey mainline trains, trams and tubes.

In terms of what attractions to visit, unless you have specific interests there is a world of general info on attractions in books and on the web.

The last District line train from Earls Court to Southfields on Mon/Sat leaves Earls Court at 0053. So we need to find out what you can do to connect with that.

The last Piccadilly line train from Heathrow T123 that goes through to Earls Court is at 2345 (T4 2335. T5 2342). There is another train from T123 at 0003 (T5 0000, no T4 option) but it terminates at Hammersmith. In principle there's a District Line train from there to Earls Court, but it arrives at ECt at 0053 so you may not succeed in making the connection. The very last train departs Heathrow T123 at 0021 (T5 0018 T4 0009) terminating at Hammersmith. At least these would get you a rather closer to Southfields for a taxi.

Another possibility is to go via Paddington on Heathrow Express and use the direct Paddington-Southfields part of the District Line (Edgware Road- Wimbledon line). The last train from Edgware Road towards Wimbledon departs at 0020, so I imagine a call about 0021 at Paddington. I'll leave you to check Heathrow Express timings to see if that gives you any additional leverage.

In sum, you can't guarantee, at all, succeeding in making these journeys and should have a few options up your sleeve depending upon how quickly you make it through formalities.

It depends on where you are coming from if your place arrives on time and if you have to collect luggage. If you hvae no luggage to collect you should make it allowing for your flight arriving on time.

If you only make it to earls court a taxi will not be too expensive to get to Southfields, however a bus might be a better option and about the same amount of time take the 490 towards Richmond and change in Richmond then take the 493 to Southfields it will only take just over an hour. One leaves T4 at 23.46 which if your flight is on time should be fine to catch.

I've done the bus option (to Richmond and onto Southfields area) and its not too bad especially at night as there's not much traffic....

Re: things to do, I grew up in London and these are my personal favourites, but it depends what you like doing:

• Science Museum and Natural History Museum (reached on District Line to South Kensington) - both free and really well done, especially the Science Museum. Loads of interactive stuff and makes for an interesting afternoon, especially if the weathers not so great
• Central London - usual stuff, Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge, Big Ben - ok for having a look but not much to do aside from that!
• Kew Gardens - largest botanical gardens in the world and stunning in the spring (reached on District Line to Kew Gardens)
• Greenwich (reached by river boat or DLR) - nice for a wander round the shops and market, National Maritime Museum is interesting and Greenwich Park is ideal for a picnic
