Is the Isle of Purbeck a good spot to spend the coming bank holiday? My mother is visiting from Canada and she wanted me to take her somewhere exciting (like Paris.) As that's not going to happen I'm looking for a nearby alternative - is this a good choice? Is there much to do?

What's Swanage like? Is it the best place to stay? Is it better to stay in Poole and just do a daytrip to Purbeck?

Is Dorchester worth visiting?

The isle of purbeck is lovely, as is that whole coast all the way west along to exmouth. It (dorset coast) one of my favourite places in the UK.

Dorchester is a lovely little place, you are also v close to maiden castle (england's biggest iron age hill fort), lulworth cove, durdle door and no end of other beautiful places. I'd say give Poole a miss and stay somewhere more rural.

Where do you recommend staying?

I've only camped down there, but there are literally no end of places you could stay - any of the villages by the sea, or dorchester itself. You couldn't go far wrong with Lulworth.

Dorchester is nice. The nearby villages are worth a look at (Tolpuddle - famous for the birth of trade unionism) and very quaint. The coast at Lulworth is spectacular. Swanage might be a good palce to base yourself. Poole is mostly charmless. Corfe (around the castle) can get choked with traffic.

Worth Matravers is a great spot with a fantastic pub from where you can walk out to Alheims Head (a peninsula with an old chapel)
