Getting back into the country

If you have used a working holiday visa from Oz for 2 years can you get back into the country for a few days as a tourist then leave a few days later? The visa ended in March but was overstayed until June. Is there a time limit or is it not possible at all?
Any info appriciated, thanks

My Aussie friend overstayed his work visa and worked illegally here in Uk for a few months. He then went to Greece for a month or 2, and on arrival back in Heathrow he was refused entry and sent on the 1st plane back to Melbourne. This was even though he told immigration he was only staying in London for a few weeks to buy a ticket back to Aus.
I guess because he had no proof of an onward journey they assmued he was going back to sneak in some more illegal work in UK....

So does this mean that he got a free ride back to Oz? If so, he was lucky, all things considered.
