Hey,

I will be going up to England for a month this coming September, and I've pasted my rough itinerary below. It is my first time to the UK so I'm not experienced with moving around. Would appreciate some comments on how I can improve this, and how doable this will be.

26-Sep Liverpool to Manchester
27-Sep Manchester
28-Sep Manchester
29-Sep Manchester to Warwick
30-Sep Warwick to Stratford-Upon-Avon to Oxford
1-Oct Oxford to London
2-Oct London
3-Oct London

5-Oct London to Avebury to Lacock to Bath
6-Oct Bath to Glastonbury to Bristol
7-Oct Bristol
8-Oct Bristol to Exeter

Thanks in advance!

Dennis

How are you planning to travel? For some sections, there aren't many options eg have to walk or cycle to / from Black Sail hostel. Are you travelling alone or with others? That affects whether car hire might be worth considering for some sections.

What things interest you? Eg if you're interested in eg Roman remains, industrial history, natural woodland etc then we could suggest places to find places of interest.

Hi Copepod! Thanks for your reply!

Beside the Lake District portion, I'm alone most the time. I'm planning to go around by bus or train, whichever is cheaper. I managed to link up most of the places, except London-Avebury-Lacock-Bath. That is a little more complicated. I think renting a car is out of the question for me as I have to pay an additional £25 per day since I'm under 23.

I'm interested to see the roman remains, English countryside, quaint towns, castles, etc.

This is doable if you're driving - but you're going to see an awful lot of roads! You'll get a flavour of a lot of places, but maybe not feel you know anywhere particularly well. You might think about refining what you're interested in, and focussing on that, rather than cramming everything in.

And if you're not driving - you're going to spend a lot of your precious time buying coach or train tickets and waiting around.

Hi jomcarroll! Sadly, I won't be renting a car. Will be taking bus and train most of the way. I adjusted a little, skipping St Ives. Added another night to Oxford and Glastonbury.

Is Megabus, First and Stagecoach reliable?

English country side and quaint towns and castles are a plenty......but not in big cities like Manchester etc. Persoanlly I'd suggest concentrating on a smaller area, so you can really explore one corner, and not sped all your time on trains which are expensive or motorways which are dull. York is an absolutely beautiful city with some cobbled streets and a city wall to walk round, parks and museums and a river - and all compact enough to explore by foot - and only a 2 hour train trip from London.

Ive spent a lot of time in Lake District over the years and think you're hopping around too much here too - give yourself time to go for a hike over a mountain, or from one small village to the next. Youll get a much better feel and impression of England if you scale your trip down considerably, in my opinion :-)

And yes I would say those bus companies are reliable. As are our trains, although dont be surprised if there are the occassional delay

Hi

This tour seems manic.

Not sure why you are going to Manchester but I would skip that, you seem to be working your way to the southwest, you could spend some time in one of the seaside towns near Exeter at the end of your trip: Torquay, Dawlish or Teignmouth maybe. If you stayed in Torquay you could go by boat to Brixham (return £2) a lovely fishing town, go by steam train to Kingswear cross the River to Dartmouth a navel town by the river also beautiful, visit Agatha Christies house by vintage bus or just chill out.

Also think you need to spend more time in Bath.

Hope this is helpful

I would totally agree with the previous poster about skipping Manchester. Off the top of my head i can't think what i would visit if i took a visitor there. Have you thought about visiting a typical seaside town, for example Brighton?
