Thanks all, thats a great help. Am I also right in assuming from Gatwick you can fly to majority of Europe.

You can get to all the major cities in Europe and quite a few of the smaller ones. If you want anything smaller than that you'd have to go to Stansted

And don't forget that in most of Clapham you are a fifteen-minute train ride away from the Eurostar terminal at Waterloo. Eurostar is the most intelligent way to get to much of northern Europe. And don't even think of flying Ryanair to Paris, since their airport there is actually more than two hours from the city.

Not for much longer - it moves to St Pancras in November, and trains will be diverted to there on the new high speed line.

and their UK airport for Paris is in Glasgow....
You can't actually fly from Gatwick to Paris - well there may be one flight a week from some obscure airline but there are no regular flights.
Heathrow is also easy enough from Clapham - train to Feltham then frequent connecting bus.

I just read that Clapham isnt a great are to live, crme sie etc. everything else I have read said its fine, as long as all the normal precautions are done???????
Thanks everyone, great info, really really helpful

Clapham is a VERY trendy place to live. Ignore the crime. Crime is everywhere in London.
As for Stansted, depending on what area of Clapham you are, you can take tube from Brixton to Tottenham Hale then change onto the Stansted train
Saves all the bother of going to Liverpool Street and doing it that way
