Hi folks - I have a question that I'm hoping a local or someone with the knowledge will answer.

I have an unlocked phone and I'm wondering what my best bet will be re getting a sim card with a decent data plan. I'm wondering if it is an option if I'm not a UK resident?

Thanks :)

Pay As You Go sim's are available all over the place (often for free, or a pound) , Carphone Warehouse, Poundland etc are the main sellers.

Pay as you go probably be your best bet.
Some networks give you a data allowance when you top up. O2 give 500mb when you top up £10.

Link for free sim from O2, I'm not sure if this is available in-store, so you may have to order online.

Data plans are usually an annual contract, so like the others have said ...

I'm also from Canada. I took my unlocked phone, walked into a Vodafone store, and got a free SIM and Pay-as-you-Go deal for £10. Minutes, texts, and lots of data. Check out their website. Very cheap by Canadian standards. And call it a mobile, not a cellphone.

Excellent I was hoping it would be that easy - I'm surprised that you didn't need to have a UK address though...

I don't think they even took my name. It is just like buying a top-up card for a prepaid cellphone in Canada. The person that helped me at the Vodafone store had to put in some info into my phone -- possibly Access Point Name for data. I was in and out in 10 minutes. I chose the Freedom Freebee card with unlimited UK texts, 150 UK minutes, and 250 MB of data for £10. More than double for £20. I think calls to Canada were 7p per minute.

I've found the best network in the UK is Vodafone and no address is required for prepay.
