Working in Iceland.

Country forums / Scandinavia & the Nordics / Iceland

Hi, people!. I held an European passport (UK) and was wonderind how to get a job (farm, hotel, bar, restaurant, constraction) in Iceland.
If any of you have the knowledge shre it with us.
Many thanks in advance.

1: Iceland is not member of the EU, but it IS a member of Schengen - Uk is exactly opposite - you have to look up immigration and work permit regulation for that individual country. Start at the icelandic embassys homepage - or http://www.utl.is/english
Not a probelm to STAY there 3-6 months for you - but you WILL need to obtain a work permit.

2: You ARE aware that Iceland "went broke" recently (financial crisis) as a country - currency dropped to 25% or so????
Expect unemployment to skyrocket (probably) and salaries to be very, very low measured in any other currency. And if this is for next summer - let's cross finger for the iIcelanders that things hopefully changes back towards normal before then?

Bjoern is right, it's highly unlikely that you'll make any serious money in the present crisis, if you can get a job at all.

2

I agree with the previous comments. The economic crisis has hot Iceland really hard and I believe now would be a difficult time to gain employment.

DO NOT GO TO ICELAND NOW!!!

Listen to me and go to another place if you are looking for work.

I came to Iceland the 1st of october and have been looking for work since, but there's nothing avaliable. Unless you speak Icelandic of course!

But if you don't you might as well save you the trouble and the money! You will not get a job here that's for sure!

But if you just want to travel around I can recommend it, Iceland is a beautiful country! also in the winter and actually it isn't that cold

Sorry if it ruins your plans, but that's just the way the situationa is here at the moment

There are websites announcing jobs available in almost all countries. We did not go to Iceland and go "job-hunting", as we were told to work there you had to be hired by a company first, and then you could begin the visa process. We did it the way we were advised. We applied while still in our own country, and once we found a position, we then began the visa processes. Yes, since we began a couple months ago, the country has gone into a bit of a crisis, but we have faith that it will recover and if it does not then we are willing to go through it with our Icelandic friends. We felt the reason Iceland has been the one in the news about all this economic crisis, is due to the fact that Iceland is a little bitty country, and so it would naturally be hit quicker than the bigger ones, that just take longer to be affected. We believe Iceland will recover and everyone there will be stronger because of it. They are a strong lot and so are we. We are not a young couple and have been through tough times throughout our lifetime, so we aren't ones to run away the minute something happens. By the way, we were told it takes up to 3 months to complete the process and we are about half way through the time period. We are looking forward to moving and living in Iceland and hope to be going very soon. The process involves all the paperwork being filled out of course, such as identification issues, medical issues, background checks, and verification of being outside the country at time of application. It is best to apply for a position before you go there and the company will then assist you through the Visa process. Just know that right now, as others have said, employment is/will be a problem for awhile unless you have a specific qualification or ability that can't be done by another citizen of the country. Iceland is a gorgeous country, with nature at it's greatest and finest, as far as we are concerned. We don't mind the gale force winds and sideways rains, or the long periods of light and darkness. If you are not familiar with the seasons and weather of the beautiful Icelandic country, a visit or vacation would be something you might consider first. Good luck in your endeavors.
