Hi, I intend to be in Sundsvall at the start of September, and I was thinking about doing some hiking above the arctic circle line. All the info I can find in my lonely planet points to this being a great Winter place, with little reference for summer/autumn activities. Can someone recommend a place to visit that has good hiking and near a town so I can eat good meals. I will be taking a tent, I was thinking about Sarek as it is a world heritage site, but if I go there it will be for one night, I am not an experienced hiker. thanks for any tips!

As you say you are inexperienced, Sarek is an absolute no. The English language pages of the website of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency warn "Sarek is not recommended for beginners. Those wishing to visit the park must have considerable alpine experience and the correct equipment ..." and describe it as an "extremely inaccessible wilderness with no facilities whatsoever for tourists."

In any case it is not near Sundsvall, which is on the Baltic coast.

In Sep you could check out the High Coast national park (Höga kusten), about 100 km north of Sundsvall. It's one of few coastal areas in Sweden that are hilly. (All land in the area has risen from the sea in about 10,000 years, up to +300 metres, it's a Unesco world heritage site).

In the Arctic Circle the Kebnekaise area or Abisko will still be open to hikers. Abisko is also accessible by train and the train from there towards Narvik is one of the more scenic in Europe (partiularly as you cross the border and the first fiord approaches after a few minutes, but the Swedish part is also of high scenic quality with a major lake, not just as much as near Narvik).

Hiking in Sarek mid of August was still ok. In September it might have some snow already.
