Stockholm / Visby / ... : accomodationCountry forums / Scandinavia & the Nordics / Sweden
We are considering to visit Stockholm and perhaps also Visby but we have some reservations about the cost of the trip, specially of the overnights. Since the decision isn’t taken yet, we still haven’t bought a guidebook. What amount should we actually provide for a double room with attached bathroom ? While we read that Visby is a very touristic place we haven’t found many addresses so far (and what we found is really expensive). Is the only option to go camping or to stay in a dormitory ? Suggestions for other visits for a few days (not too far from Stockholm and journeys by bus, boat or train) are welcome. Thanks in advance.
Both Stockholm and the island of Gotland are great in Summer. Visby is as you say, touristic, (it's were all the Swedes are holidaying) but the atmosphere in Summer is fantastic! Here's some links that might be useful for accomodation and other tips concerning Visby: | 1
Röda båten and Af Chapman are popular hostels in Stockholm, both on boats, and good central location. Private/double rooms also available on these boats. Gotland is expensive if you stay in Visby. Inland is much cheaper. I stayed a couple of years ago at a hostel (forgot the name) for under SEK 200/night. | 2
It's touristic in a Scandinavian context, with a short peak season and with some events which attract people to the island. (It's not that every person in Sweden travels there every year.) The countryside is usually very relaxed. Before around June 20 and after around August 15 it's more like shoulder season. Between 3rd and 10th of July '11 it's very busy because of the annual "Politicians' Week" with plenty of speeches and seminars. The hotels tend to be booked by politicians and journalists then. The "Medieval Week" in August. ( http://www.medeltidsveckan.se/eng/index.pab ) The inofficial (?) Stockholm(er) Week seems to occur between 18th and 24th July 2011. | 3
Another hostel in Stockholm. [http://www.fridhemsplan.se/?p=Main&c=sv] I stayed there out of season so I don't know how crowded or noisy it is in the summer. | 4
Regarding suggestions for other visits: You did not mention what kind of places you are interested in. Nature, culture, history, castles, beaches? A day-trip (or more) in the Stockholm archipelago is nice. There are also many castles in and around Stockholm. Birka is an island where the oldest known Swedish trading post has been excavated. How long will you stay? You will need some days to discover Stockholm. | 5
Hello ‘linnea2376’, ‘Fieldgate’, ‘Scand1’ and ‘surfnturf’, Thank you very much for your anwers. The information on http://www.gotland.net/sv looks very interesting. Too bad that the links to the contacts and the location of accommodation in Gotland are only in Swedish. Since we absolutely look for a private room with attached bathroom, it’s clear that Gotland isn’t financially feasible for us. The prices of the youth hostels in Stockholm are the absolute maximum that we can afford. We knew that Sweden was expensive. Now we see how much expensive. Thanks and best wishes ! | 6
