These days when more and more travelers bring a smartphone I thought it may be useful for some to know the situation on such in Sweden. Others with more or differing info are of course welcome to add to this thread.

It is very easy to acquire a sim card in Sweden. They are sold in phone stores etc. No registration or permit is needed. To many this may seem as self evident and needless info. But I can tell you that some places, like India, it is way more complicated even to get a simple cell phone sim. You need to supply a copy of your passport, a recent photograph, and in some places even a recommendation from your hotel manager. Not so here.

Personally I recently changed operator and now have smartphone sims from Comviq for my cell phones. Each cost 195 SEK (21 Euro), to buy, and then needed a top up of 150 SEK (17 Euro) to give me cheap calls and 6 GB of Internet traffic. I have one Comviq Amigo and one Comviq Kompis. Don't really remember the difference between them, it is not huge.
There are of course several cell phone operators. I picked Comviq because there is no fixed monthly charge.

There is good 3G acess here in Stockholm where I live, and quite a few hot spots with free wifi access such as libraries and Mc Donalds etc.

Sweden has only one cell phone zone, ie there are no roaming charges within the country.

I am quite sure that a Swedish sim card will work in the other Nordic countries, but at a somewhat higher rate per unit.

This is meant as info only. I have no affiliation with any company mentioned.

A year later I have to revoke my recommendations for Comviq. It seems the rules have changed quite dramatically.

Recently I topped up my Comviq Amigo sim with 200 SEK and expected to have 6 GB free Internet traffic for a month. Not so anymore. I get 200 MB free. Then for the first 100 MB per day I pay 6 SEK, abt 70 Eurocents. For anything beyond that they charge me a hefty 1 SEK per MB.

I have called their support and they say this is how it has always been. But I am sure they are lying. I believe I would have noticed if there was such a fat traffic charge. But then again I was abroad October - March.

Anyway I strongly suggest you look for other providers. I most certainly will.
