Reschedule my trip?Country forums / Scandinavia & the Nordics
I booked a trip to Helsinki in June for one month. My plan was to explore the big cities in Scandinavia (e.g. Helsinki, Oslo, Stockholm), but spend most of my time in the north for hiking and wild camping. After doing some research, it sounds like June is pretty much the start of peak season for mozzies and all types of flying creatures. I'm not too fond of having to do outdoor activities with that going on, so my thought is to schedule for next spring when I can make sure it coincides with seeing the Northern Lights. Pretty sure if I cancel, it's a full refund because I booked with all reward points and believe I saw a note stating it's 100% refundable. Good idea to re-book?
If you wanna hike and wild camp in the North, the end of June is perfect for that since you will have 24 hour daylight. I usually do the trips to Northern Norway coast on July or August since then it's still light but it's a bit warmer later in the summer, like +12°C instead of +5°C. Yes, there are mosquitoes and black flies on summer. They are annoying but as long as you are in a windy spot, you are safe. At the moment, the spring is late in Finland. The trees don't have leaves in Helsinki yet. In the North there is still snow around and ice is covering the lakes and rivers. In that way June-July-August are the months for camping, for every other month you need proper winter gear. And they won't harm on summer either. If you are travelling to see Northern Lights, then you definitely need to re-schedule for winter months (October-March). | 1
Thanks for the info! I might still reschedule due to the "potential" issue with bugs. Still debating. | 2
Winter months ( "early spring") means COLD, places not being accessible due to snow and some accomodation and service being closed. The "nice" season happens to be the same for humane as for critters. Best chance to avoid most insects and still being able to enjoy the nature will be late august/early september. | 3
