Oslo on 17 MayCountry forums / Scandinavia & the Nordics / Norway
We will be in Oslo for the holiday. We plan to enjoy the festivities in the morning but we're looking for something to do in the afternoon. Since all the museums and main sites seem to be closed, what are our options? We wouldn't mind going out of town but do not want to end up where nothing is open. Any suggestions?
You can enjoy all outdoor sights, such as the Vigeland sculpture park. Perhaps you can go on a boat trip on the fjord. | 1
I can recommend finding a table (be patient) at Aker Brygge - the harbour. If you are lucky with the weather this will give you a nice round off in the evening. There is also plenty of restaurants and bars open around the town. From the harbour there is also possible to catch a ferry to see the Oslo fjord - either a tourist ferry or one of the local ferries to the islands (departuring from Vippetangen) or to Nesodden (departuring from Aker Brygge). Enjoy the national day, an unforgetable experience - and don't forget to catch a glimpse of the royal family standing at the castle balcony ;) | 2
DO NOT waste your time or money at Aker Brygge! | 3
I don't agree in the term waste, yes it is expensive here but definitely worth it. | 4
No, it's not. In addition to being very overpriced, what you get there is mediocre compared to what you can get most other places. | 5
At the Kings Guards 'Gardeleiren' base just out of the city, the King's Guards put on a drill show in the afternoon on the 17th May. They are known through out the world for their precision. | 6
