One week in IcelandCountry forums / Scandinavia & the Nordics / Iceland
My boyfriend and I will be traveling to Iceland for one week in mid-July, and would love any thoughts or suggestions from those who have been to Iceland on our tentative plans! This will be both of our first times to Iceland. Thanks in advance. :-) Sunday: arrive 6 am, pick up rental car Monday: Drive to Jokulsarlon Tuesday: Visit Landmannalaugar Wednesday: Visit Geysir, Gulfoss, pingvellir Thursday: Day trip to Hraunfossar, Barnafoss, and Kaldidalur Friday: Explore and stay in Reykjavik Saturday: Explore Reykjavik, depart at 7 pm
You plan to much IMHO. Monday especially. Really think you will spend most of the time in the car. | 1
Iceland may be bigger than you think it is. R to Jokulsarlon and then back to Vik is nearly 600km (J is about 75km W of Hofn): Landmannalaugar is on a mountain road and your hirer will require you to hire a 4wd to go there, may be same for Kaldidalur. You've actually come unnecessarily far back W at Vik to proceed to L, though this is a very scantily populated region and it can be difficult to find accommodation further E, I appreciate. The mountain bus, which can probably go faster than you, having much bigger wheels and higher clearance, takes 2h30 driving time to get from Kirkjubaearklaustur to L, and 2h30 driving time between Hella and L. http://www.nat.is/re/bus_stop_fjallabak.htm | 2
Since you return your car on Thursday, you may choose some organized day-tours, like Golden Circle, or whale-watching. And I agree with previous guys, the present itinerary looks a bit messy. You can examine this blog - www.iceland24blog.com - there is plenty of useful info in it. | 3
