Norway in a Nutshell separate tickets

Country forums / Scandinavia & the Nordics / Norway

Hi everybody,

I want to do one of the Nutshell trips on a Monday in September, buying all the tickets separately. I already found a lot of information in other threads, however some questions still remain that you can help me with hopefully.

1) Bergen-Voss by train, 176 NOK
Dep. 8:40, Arr. 9:52

2) Voss-Gudvangen by bus, 76 NOK according to an old TT thread
Dep. 10:00, Arr. 11:10

3) Gudvangen-Flam by ferry, 265 NOK
Dep. 11:30, Arr. 13:40

4) Flam-Myrdal by train, 250 NOK
Dep. 16:05, Arr. 17:03

5) Myrdal-Oslo by train, 199 NOK Minipris, 623 NOK standard fare
Dep. 17:52, Arr. 22:32

I have already booked 5) and got the 199 NOK Minipris.

My first question basically is: Is there any need to buy any of the other tickets in advance? CAN any of these bought online? 1) seems to be a local train, so I assume I can just buy the ticket at the station some minutes before departure. 2) can be bought on the bus according to a different Thorntree thread. So my question basically concerns the ferry and the Flam-Myrdal train. Any need for (and possibility of) advance reservation? What do you think?

My second question concerns the bus: 8 minute is quite a short time for this connection - is the bus stop easy to find? What's the bus line number / operator? I cannot afford to miss the ferry, as the next one is at 16:00...

Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
Malte.

Hi,

I did some more research myself and found that there is an earlier train at 7:58, arriving at Voss at 9:05. Does anybody know if there is also an earlier bus to Gudvangen that I might catch?

As mentioned before, I cannot afford to miss that 11:30 ferry.

Cheers,
Malte.

Hi I did the Norway in a nutshell trip last week. I stopped an additional night in Voss and picked up the bus the next day. There were a number of buses waiting at Voss station to pick up the Nutshell people and I am sure that the ferry would wait until all the busses had arrived at the ferry port. The whole operation seemed very well organised.

Also, I saw someone buy a ticket for the bus directly from the driver for the Voss-Vangen leg. The buses stop directly outside Voss station.

Flam - Myrdal: if it is very busy with a cruise ship in the harbour you might be unlucky and find that the train is fully booked, but on the day I was there the liner came in early morning and the passengers went up on the first and second trains. I suggest you go directly to the tourist centre (next to where the ferry docks) to book tickets as soon as you arrive, just to be on the safe side.

Hi,

thanks for the info... how about the ferry, do you know if I can buy tickets on board or is there a ticket booth where I have to queue?

Cheers,
Malte.

Hi

There is a ticket office at the port and also you could probably buy from the ferry staff - there was a huge and unneccessary crush to get on the boat but I think that I saw someone handing over money when they boarded.

You might be able to buy a ticket at the tourist info in Bergen.

Hi everybody,

for future travellers' reference, this was my experience:

I had bought the Myrdal-Oslo leg way in advance and got the 199 NOK minipris. A day before the trip, I went to the tourist info in Bergen and found that I was able to buy all remaining tickets there, with the exception of the bus ticket which I could buy from the driver. I even got a student's discount for the regional train and the ferry. All in all, extremely easy and nothing to worry about.

Also, the bus ticket is 86 NOK full fare, or 68 NOK student's fare.

Cheers,
Malte.
