Northern Scandinavia -> Greenland -> Northern Canada

Hi,
i would just like to ask how possible is it to follow this route; Northern Scandinavia -> Greenland -> Northern Canada. Which transportation means are there available- especially in the Greenland part? Are there airports available/accessible to travellers in Greenland? What time of the year?

I don't know where to start from. If somebody could point me to a link for the same route ....

There are plenty of airports in Greenland 3 with international connections to Denmark or Iceland + Baltimore USA. No way to travel to Canada or to Northern Scandinavia (how many would you think would travel on such a route/day or /week????) on a direct plane

What about sea connections/ports? Is also travelling in Winter prohibited? I somewhere read, that the lowst middle temperature is ~17F/-9C, which doesn't seem logical.

Bjoern, I strongly suspect that if the Smyril Line Ferries that sail between Europe, the Shetland Islands, the Faroe Islands and Iceland were to have a port of call on the east coast of either Canada or the U.S.A. that they would do a thriving business.

Personally, I would just love to be able put a car or a motorcycle on a seagoing ferry and travel to Europe that way. I would then have my own transportation when I arrived there.

you can fly from all kinds of places in Scandinavia to Iceland on a variety of airlines, and then to Greenland from Iceland.

Icelandair's supposedly flying to Halifax this summer, so that's a route that might be worth researching. I think it's the closest you'll get to direct connections.

I have been having a similar idea of such a route, in particular as for Greenland to Canada. If your budget isn't much of a problem, you could always considering chartering a plane. I wanted to travel from Qaanaaq (Thule), Greenland to Grise Fiord, Ellesmere Island or possible to Resolute. Try www.borekair.com . I e-mailed them and their response was that it is certainly doable to charter a plane between Greenland and Canada, provided the weather is okay. You could also try travelling between larger communities, such as Nuuk to Iqaluit, as it is more likely other people will want to charter planes between there than as for the most northern parts, making it cheaper for you.

There are NO ferryes to/from Greenland (from anywhere) anymore. Only crusi ships.

Re the Smyril line - try looking at a map - the tour Denmark-xx-yy-Iceland allready takes for ever. Try to addd NAmerica and Greenland!!! It would take weeks to do the round trip and cost accordingly!
There IS a reason that you do not sail between Europe and NAmerica anymore! You cannot even take a ferry between Australia and New Zealand!

And secondly Smyril is mainly used by ppl. that absolutely wants to bring their own car - no matter how much time and money it costs. There is no use for a car in Greenland, as there are no roads connecting any places.

I don't know how to get to Greenland by boat, but i know that there is similar post line along the coast as Norway's Hurtigruten. I think it's called Sarfaq Ittuk and the whole tour takes two weeks. Check: http://www.aul.gl/.<BR>

I want to get to the USA via Canada in summer 2010, overland/ferries etc., not planes. I will leave from Cyprus - Turkey - europe and onwards, but how to get to Canada overland/ferries? Any ideas please. amazingworld
