NORTHERN LIGHTS - ICELAND

Country forums / Scandinavia & the Nordics / Iceland

Hey everyone,

I'm looking to book a holiday to Iceland this winter to see the Northern Lights. Please can you tell me when is the best time to go to see them? Is it October or November? Any info would be most welcome.

Many thanks,

xx

The best time would be in a few years time, as the solar activity is currently abnormally low and unlikely to pick up much by this winter. Iceland isn't the best country for it either, as it is very cloudy and somewhat to the south of the best latitude. Also sensible to consult a moon chart and avoid those weeks when the moon is bright in the sky in the evening. And after all that, you'll still need some luck. But otherwise November and February have a reputation as the best months.

Thanks Iviehoff for the info. Sounds like I won't have much of a chance in seeing anything. Where else would you suggest if Iceland isn't the best choice? Or should I forget it because of the solar activity? . . .So desperate to see them. :-( Although I still want to visit Iceland for other reasons.

Northern Sweden or Finland - NORTH Greenland away from the coast (again the cloud probelm): Kangerlussuak (Søndre Strømfljord is the obvious choise), Svalbard can be a bit too far north!!! - but clouds IS the big probelm nearlyevery where - in addition that the NL have to be "on" .

Ok I have just checked the moon chart for Iceland and it appears to be a new moon on 16th November (its still GMT right? my research found it). Where should I go in Iceland for this date in the hope of seeing something then?? Please guys don't let me down!. ..

Thanks a mill xx
