I will be going to Svalbard in early July. I would love to visit Ny-Ålesund but I will not be going on any of the tours that pass by there as they are too expensive. Is it hard to be allowed to go to Ny-Ålesund by airplane from Longyearbyen? I could consider staying there overnight, in which case I have a tent (if it's possible to camp there). Otherwise there's a hotel there, isn't there? Else, a day trip could be fine. I would be careful so as to not harm any scientific devices...

I don't think you are alowed to go there without a special permit from the Governor unless you are a scientist involvedin any of the projects there. Read more about Ny Ålesund here.

I don't think there is one. Not in the true meaning of a hotel. Normal number of inhabitants in Ny Ålesund is only 20 - 30 scientist from all over the world, they have other things to do than occupy themself about tourists. In the summer the number can rise to 130 scientists. But i do think you can go there on an arranged trip with boat in the summer.
