Hi,

Im planning a trip to the western fjords of Norway this July.

In my trip which will be one week long (7 days), i plan to visit the following (the possibly not all):

Geiranger
Eidfjord
Kjfossen
Flam
Fjaerlandsfjord
Loenvatnat lake

The questions I have are:

1) Could I visit the following on independent day trips (by car) from Bergen

2) If this is not possible, what towns would be most pleasant and practical to base myself in? From reading up on the subject it seems the following towns (Lom, Loen, Balestrand, Geiranger) would be pleasant to base myself in?

3) Similar question, but is there one town from my list, unless anyone can recommend another, that would act like a midway point between the Fjords and sights I wish to take in?

4) Should I book accomodation in advance at this time of year, or is it possible to arrive at wherever I choose to lay my hat and hope to find a hotel room?

5) Can you see the fjords by car, or do you really need to be travelling on long boat trips in order to get the best from such a trip.

Many thanks to you all.

J.

To your #5: Car is perfect, and driving will normally include some ferry crossings to provide you with view offshore.

Thanks jostmoen, thats most helpful to know that.

Can you also recommend any nice towns to stay at near Geiranger, or maybe half-way between Bergen and Geirganger?

Thanks!

Well, I'm not from these parts of Norway but I can suggest Askvold. From there you can catch a boat to Værlandet and Bulandet which is Norway's westernmost place with a regular settlement. I've been there in kayakk and it was beautiful and strange.

  1. You could not do this as indipendent daytrips from Bergen
    2. Balestrand is difficult as you are totally dependent on ferries
    3. Loen/Stryn would be a good area to stay doing a daytrips to Geiranger, Briksdal Glacier or Stryn Summer Ski.
    4. If staying at hotels book ahead. If you can do with a basic camping cabin (bring bedlinnen) it's possible to turn up if getting there early, or call a day ahead (maybe get help from various tourist information offices). Camping cottages and Accomodation listing
    5. You don't need to go on long boat trips, but there will be a few shorter ones to take. Doing a loop to Geiranger from Stryn, Drive up Stryn and across Stryn mountain and down past Dalsnibba to Geiranger. From Geiranger take the ferry to Hellesylt and return to Stryn.

Driving Stryn-Bergen in a day is ok, but you will not be able to stop much so save this for going back. I suggest you plan on staying one other place on your way there. Driving takes time in the fjord area.

Well you could do Eidfjord as an indipendent daytrip, but I really se no point when continuing up thrugh the fjords.
