Cost of Motorhome Travel vs. Guesthouse

Country forums / Scandinavia & the Nordics / Iceland

There are 3 of us planning to visit in August for 10+ days and we are looking at options for travel and overnight. At first it appeared that renting a motorhome might be less expensive than staying in guest/farm houses or self catering. The motorhome provides more flexibility in where to stay and for meal preparation, but seeing that guesthouses offer kitchens, they might be comparable in cost when fuel is added to the equation. Does anyone have experience in the two options?

Hi,

By motorhome, do you mean those little van (such as Renault Kangoo) that are tweaked to fit a bed and a small fridge or the big motorhome.
The later is really expensive, the first one should be a bit less expansive than the guesthouses.
The cheaper option and best to be flexible is to camp. You can rent a 3 person tent when I don´t think you can rent a little van for 3.
I have seen option for 3,4 persons on some van´s rental website, but the option is actually 2 sleeping in the van and the others sleeping in a tent. I would rather be all together camping then.
There are some nice campsites all over Iceland, some even with kitchen.

Thank you for your reply. No, I do not mean camper van; a true motorhome with kitchen, bathroom, shower and 3 beds. Outdoor camping is not an option for our group.

If you are going to rent a motorhome I can recommend this company.
