Hey I am headed to Iceland soon. We are planning a 4 day hike but we have 1.5 days before the hike and 5 free days after the hike. We plan to hire a camper van for the 5 day bit. Obviously we won't have enough time to circle the country but we will have time to do more than the golden circle... so my question.

How does this sound?
1.5 days - visit snaefellsnes area
5 days - head along the southern border from Rejkivik to Jökulsárlón and on the way back hit the golden circle.

Is that what you would do?

Well, as a local I guess I'm not really qualified to answer - I usually have a more generous time budget for trips in Iceland :-)

I can't see anything wrong with your plan - five days certainly should give you ample time to drive out to the lagoon and back. Since you mention a four day hike I imagine you are in good shape - if the weather cooperates you might want to climb Snæfellsjökull. No special gear should be necessary (I once met an American student wearing sandals at the very top!) just follow the snowmobile trail up to the top (this is important - if they have stopped running trips this year you may not want to do the hike, there are crevasses - which they fill in). As far as I know the road to where they start their trips is open to all vehicles - but ask at Arnarstapi (their HQ, I think the company is called "Snjófell").

I'm bummed I missed your response. Wow your country is BEAUTIFUL! We did the Laugavegur hike and it was the highlight of my trip - lucked out with blue skies so we got to see all the views with great visibility. We wanted to climb Snæfellsjökull but our weather in the peninsula was awful. I have never experience wind and rain like that in my life... especially the wind, wow it was scary to walk around outside at all. I swear I almost got blown off a small cliff.
