HI everyone,

I'm hoping some of you who are regular travelers can help me out. I just booked our flight for Greece from the US and it looks like we get to have a bonus layover in Zurich both going to and coming back. I'm pretty new to international travel so I am really winging it trying to decipher the boarding information.

It says that we depart:
Boston (BOS) - Zurich (ZRH) - Sun. 10.07.2011 21:40 BOS - 10:55 +1 ZRH
Zurich (ZRH) - Thessaloniki (SKG) - Mon. 11.07.2011 22:35 ZRH - 01:45 +1 SKG

and return:
Thessaloniki (SKG) - Zurich (ZRH) - Thu. 21.07.2011 04:50 SKG - 06:10 ZRH
Zurich (ZRH) - Boston (BOS) - Thu. 21.07.2011 17:30 ZRH - 19:50 BOS

I'm not sure what the +1 means but I'm reading that we leave Boston @ 9:40pm and arrive at 10:55am on Monday in Zurich (Swiss time) and do not fly out to Thessoliniki until 10:35pm Monday. Is this correct??

If so, can anyone give me some can't miss sights/activities to go see/do while there for 12 hours?

It looks like we get double the opportunity because I'm reading our return trip to be a 6:10am arrival in Zurich and not leave until 5:30pm on Thursday?! That gives us another long day to explore!

We aren't too touristy but do like to see the sites. We'd love to go where the locals hang out!

Thanks so much!

Everybody makes mistakes, and yours is to believe that Zürich is in Sweden when it's actually in Switzerland:-) Re-post on the Western Europe branch.

Well, they are two out of only three countries in the entire world whose names start with -Sw, so it's a small and natural mistake. At least you didn't post under Swaziland...

Why is it that only Americans make that mistake? I have never seen an Australian or Japanese, or even Canadians confuse us with the Swiss.

Norway, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nauru, Nepal, Nigeria .. I have no problems keeping them apart.

I could not avoid linking to this thread in my Sweden-Switzerland comparison post: http://temporarystockholmer.blogspot.com/2010/10/sweden-and-switzerland.html

But I have understanding for americans not knowing much about the rest of the world.

USA is overwhelming, "hardcore", the real deal. All sorts of nature, all sorts of ethnic groups, international language, the feeling that the whole world is already "represented" within the US. I can imagine that it can be hard becoming interested in safer and less entertaining places (like Sweden and Switzerland) if you grew up in the US. There's a reason why swedes watch the american life on television but not the reverse.

(Native stockholmers don't really know much about the difference between the medium-sized swedish towns Linköping and Lidköping. Why bother, when the coolest slices of Sweden is already "represented" in Stockholm?)

I just returned from Sweden and was a bit puzzled by how many people asked me "How was your trip to Switzerland?" I guess the two countries must just stick together in some people's minds.

Same thing with Tasmania and Tanzania. I returned form east Africa, and everyone wanted to know about the kangaroos and Tasmanian devils. :-)
