My wife and I are planning a trip to the Faroe Islands via Copenhagen, and were thinking we would spend a few (4-5) days in southern sweden as we have never been. Stockholm seems like an obvious stop for a day or two, any suggestions on what would be a good but not too hectic itinerary for this amount of time.

Thanks,
Neal and Kate, USA

Although Stockholm is geographically in the souther half of Sweden, I think few would consider it "Southern Sweden".

Stockholm deserves at least 2 full days! 3 better - and this not includig days spoiled due to jet lag. A single day is IMHO a waste of time and money.
Guess that you have seen Copenhagen before since you do not mention that obvious place for your trip - if not "must sees" in Copenhagen + the obvious daytours would take 3-4 full days minimum. Add a day to see Malmö and Lund, if Sweden attracts you. Lots of interesting places "out on the coutry side" - other towns in the "real" southern 100 km of Sweden (in Skåne [Scania] and Blekinge) - you will need a car for most of these. Glasriket ("The Glas Kingdom) a bit more to the NE with a multitude of artworks is a big attraction fot those interested in this art.

IMHO it's a big trip (in reality 5 hours transport each way - both flying, and train - 7 hours driving) to go from Copenhagen to Stockholm - and back again, unless you already have seen Copenhagen and vicinity as well as Skåne!
Remember that each city, town, region have tons of info from official tourist offices on the net.

Thanks so much for the reply. As you suspected we have spent a fair amount of time in Copenhagen and my wife traveled even more extensively in Denmark. I did not realize Stockholm was that far away, we may have to rethink a visit there with limited time.

If you plan to visit Southern Sweden, a trip to Lund's wonderful romanesqe cathedral is nearlly manditory. Malmo is just over the water from Copenhagen, and you can access it via the new bridge, and from memory Lund is only about a couple hours by train from Malmo.

Malmö - Lund takes 12-16 minutes by train
Copenhagen-Malmö by train 35 min

If you rent a car you could tour the region.

Some examples:

Ystad, small old town, home of Kurt Wallander if you are into criminal novels.
Ales Stenar old monument with stones placed in the shape of a ship on a cliff, spectacular view and some interesting debate whether it really is an astronimical observatorium.
Osterlen, beatiful nature, for example Havang or Simrishamn.

Some ideas...

By all means you have to go to Österlen if you go now or in springtime. Winter...hmm not as good. but Österlen (the region between Kivik and Ystad basically) is wonderful and unlike rest of Sweden in many ways, A place where artists and writers and other "freedom needing inspiering people" settle down...

. Check out Ale Stenar, Sandhammaren, Kivik, Brösarps backar and stop at the best café in Sweden- Olof Viktors (outside Ystad)
