My boyfriend and I are both Canadians and plan on traveling to Europe in July. We are hoping to stay for about 5 months assuming we would be able to find part time jobs. I have heard conflicting advice about finding work without a visa. So firstly, how hard would it be to find a part time job (restaurant, hotel, etc.)? and would having a work visa make things much easier for us?

Also, we would love to make our way up to Hammerfest. Does anyone have an idea for the best way to do this? Either train, hitchhiking (is Norway safe enough for that?), etc. Thanks for the help!

Yuo will defently need a working visa if you plan to get a job in a hotel/resturant in Norway and i think it will be the same for the whole of europe.

The best way to travel up north in norway will be by bus train and boat. The train does not go further north than Bodø i think. But i guess it will be easy to get the bus from there og you can take the Hurtigruten ferry up the coast.

Working illegally in Europe is considered a crime - not like a parking ticket, but like burglary or worse.
This does not mean that it is impossible - but that it is very risky - and very low paid.

Getting a "Working PERMIT" (not a visa in the wording used here) is not really possible unless some company is very eager to hire you due to your extraordinay skills before you even arrive here!

Going north, get on train in Oslo, go to Trondheim, change trains, go further north to Fauske, get on bus to Narvik, change in Narvik, go on with bus, think you have to change at least one more time, maybe go to Tromsø (nice place), change busses again, go to Hammerfest. This is a trip of a little less than 30 hours travelling (aprox.). You migth want to do it nicer, do the train to Trondheim, get on the Costal Express (Hurtigruten) and do the rest of the trip on board. Fly south from Hammerfest. Try to get a stop in Lofoten, Vesterålen or Senja (wonderful nature!) and maybe Tromsø or Harstad (nice little cities/towns). MUCH nicer than just travelling, but more expencive.

Is Norway safe enough for....

It is probably the Safe Place on Earth. Maybe the only exeption is Oslo and some Drug Trafficing there. The rest of the country is as safe as nowhere on Earth.

...and expensive..... Prepare to pay NOK 60 - 80 or more for a beer in a bar or restaurant.
