Hi all
I am planning a trip to Tromso for watching Northern Lights. I would stay 3-4 nights to maximise chances to spot them. So far it looks like that guided tours with van are the best option, but they are relatively expensive and booking ahead 4 of them is out of budget. So I was thinking about a hotel outside in the nature, far from the city's lights - so I can just step into the yard and look at the sky. Any suggestion for such a hotel?
Any other idea/recommendation?

Many thanks!!

I don't know exactly and perhaps locals would know more, but while we were in Tromso a couple of Septembers ago, while the wife was out shopping for gifts, i walked over the high bridge that spans the harbour.

And i did think to myself in the dead of night, with just a few car headlights about this would be a good place to watch out for the Northern Lights, would it still be the close to the city lights?

The bridge is way too close and it is lit by streetlights.

Most hotels are, unsurprisingly, well within the city. As I recall there is a camping site that lets out cabins on the mainland (east of the city) and a rorbu rental (cabins/houses on the waterfront) on Kvaløya, the large island to the west. My info is a bit old, though. Try http://www.visittromso.no/en/ and google for more updated info.

Hi,

I just came back from Tromso, so I thought I'd comment.
Even tough tours for "chase" the Northern Lights are not off the charts expensive, I would highly recommend a car rental. For the price of the tour, you can take a car for a few days and, that way, go chase the lights whenever you want. We were lucky to spot them on the first night itself, but I know it's not always the case.
If you need further tips on how to spot the aurora borealis outside Tromso, this blog post might help.

Good luck with the chase.. the lights are STUNNING!! :)
