Hi guys, I was wondering if any one has any experience doing expeditions in Svalbard. If so, is it possible to do one without having booked in advance? Can you just make your own way there and then hop on an expedition? Thanks.

Hi

Doesn't have any personal experience.. But there are plenty of tour operators in Longyearbyen, don't see why they wouldn't sell you an expedition if you showed up.. BUT some expeditions have minimum requirements or set dates... So they might not be ready for you if you just show up.. That could mean you'll have to wait for them to be ready....

Here's a good overview over all the tour companies on Svalbard: http://www.svalbard.com/touristinfo.htm

I would check them out before you go...

I have been to Svalbard three times. Spitsbergen Travel does some interesting day and multi-day trips from Longyearbyen. I took several on my first visit there and they seem reliable.

They wouldn't if they were full. They usually sell all their big tours out well in advance. Turning up on spec, you are basically hoping for some no-shows to provide short term vacancy. It can happen.

There is some interesting stuff you can do around Longyearbyen as #3 says where advance booking is less critical, but it depends what you call an expedition, it might not amount to that in your view.
